My b.w. and I have just returned from the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre where we heard the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra perform with quintessential piano artist Emanuel Ax in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat Major, a rewarding performance that will live long in our memories. Moments of perfection are not common in most concert halls, and when they occur they are to be remembered and treasured.

Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture” opened the concert with brisk tempo and authority. Then pianist Emanuel Ax played Piano Concerto No. 2 with a perfection rarely heard – every note and run was clear, precise, and of silvery quality. The “Rondo” final movement traveled at breakneck speed and yet seemed relaxed and sublime. Ax is a pianist’s pianist and has all the fingers that only the greatest pianists possess.

His performance was an extraordinary personal experience for me and I shall jump at the opportunity to hear him again.

After intermission we heard the world premiere of “Drama/Self Pity” for orchestra composed by Lisa Bielawa who was present in the hall.

Composer Bielawa explains that the piece was supposed to be listening in on people making excuses especially, “Do you solve everything by crying?” This fast paced rhythmic romp will need a few listens before any opinion is possible. Would I hear it again? Yes.

The program ended with Maestro Jacobsen and the orchestra performing Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor. Ah, Mozart! Just right for a beautiful Sunday afternoon.
