For the third time in four games the Winter Park Wildcats squeaked out a narrow win to keep their undefeated streak alive on the gridiron.

The Wildcats snagged two interceptions and a fumble to help engineer their 24-20 edging of Orlando University, emerging with a 4-0 record as a result.

Defense helped keep Winter Park in the game with those three key takeaways, and the Winter Park secondary held University quarterback Luke Poorman to just 172 yards in the air.

But early in the second half, it was looking like anything but a win for the Wildcats, who let University put 20 points up on the scoreboard before they scored their first touchdown. But once the Cougars let the Wildcats into the end zone, the floodgates opened. The Wildcats would go on to score three consecutive touchdowns and a field goal to win it all.

The game winning score would come on a wild play when Winter Park’s Tommy Whitted snagged a Poorman fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, with the extra point putting the Wildcats up 21-20. A Chris Saunier field goal would provide the final tally.

Winter Park has made a habit out of pulling off heart-attack wins this season. With the exception of last weeks’ 49-0 blowout of Ocoee, the Wildcats have won all of their games by a margin of less than a touchdown.

They’ll see if they can keep up their streak with a 7:30 p.m. Friday showdown at Boone.

Edgewater

The Edgewater Eagles (2-2) erased the sting of two straight narrow losses with a 45-6 blowout of Olympia (0-3) on Sept. 19.

Olympia quarterback Khalyn Strickland was held to just 61 yards passing in the game, with 30 of those coming on one throw. Edgewater’s defense did an even better job stifling the Olympia run game, holding the team to just 31 yards on 20 carries.

The Eagles have a bye week before they head for a 7 p.m. Oct. 3 showdown in Leesburg.
