ONGOING

Stepped-up law enforcement activities will be conducted during the 2011 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization through June 5. Winter Park Police Department Officers will be focusing their traffic enforcement efforts toward unbelted vehicle occupants around the clock during this time.

THURSDAY

The Florida League announces opening night for the 2011 Florida League baseball season at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2 at Sanford Memorial Stadium. The Sanford River Rats will be playing against the Florida League defending champion Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. Mayor Jeff Triplett will be throwing out the first pitch to start the season. Tickets will be sold at the gate for $5. Kids ages 6 to 12 and senior citizens are $3. Children younger than 6 will get in free. FRIDAY

The groundbreaking event for Maitland City Hall will take place at 8:30 a.m. June 3. Independence Lane, immediately east of the new city hall site, is temporarily closed to accommodate construction of both city hall and the fire station. It will be reopened in about one year when construction is complete.

Junior Achievement of Central Florida will host its 10th annual golf tournament on Friday, June 3 at Disney’s Osprey Ridge Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista. SATURDAY

The Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra proudly present Jeans & Jewels Speakeasy, a fundraising event designed for those who enjoy music, dancing and fun in a casual atmosphere. The event begins at 7 p.m. June 4 at the Winter Park Garden Club in Mead Garden, 1300 S. Denning Drive. The cost is $75 per person, or $65 per person for members of the Friends. Florida Blood Centers is hosting a city blood drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 6 in front of Winter Park City Hall, 401 Park Ave. S. The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park is holding auditions for prospective choir members. League of Women Voters June Hot Topics Luncheon presents “The Environment: How Florida Women Led the Way.” Speakers are Victoria Tshinkel, Chairman of 1000 Friends of Florida; Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Healy and Rollins College adjunct Professor Leslie Kemp Poole. Harry P. Leu Gardens presents “Hunter-Gatherers, Monuments and Memory: An example from the St. Johns River Valley” at 7 p.m. June 9. This presentation by Dr. Jon Endonino of Eastern Kentucky University explores the relationship between monument construction and remembering and how it relates to the ways through which people define themselves and others. Polasek Garden, 633 Osceola Ave, Winter Park, will be hosting a class titled “Beautiful Butterflies and the Native Plants They Love” from 10-11:30 a.m. June 9 taught by Garden Volunteer and Seminole County Master Gardener Nancy Tyree. Learn butterfly habits, flight patterns, required larval foods, preferred nectar foods and mating dances. The cost for this class will be $8 for museum members and $10 for non-members.
