Learn self defense from 6 to 8 p.m. on May 10. The Winter Park Police Department and the Victim Service Center of Central Florida frequently host free women’s safety awareness classes for all interested women that have a tie to the city of Winter Park. There is no special dress or equipment needed. This class is ladies only and is limited to the first 25 who sign up. Ages 14 and older are welcome. It's like UCF Flying Horse Editions’ regular Letterpress Happy Hours, but this time the social takes place at the Mennello Museum in conjunction with “IMPRINTS: 20 Years of Flying Horse Editions.” View the exhibition, and create hand-printed works of art in the print studio run by our UCF art students, a.k.a. “Artists in Ac- tion.” The SwedeDISH Food Truck will serve its specialties. Join the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce at 8:15 a.m. Friday, May 11, as we welcome our local Fair Trade Town Steering Committee as they share how Winter Park is poised to become the first certified Fair Trade Town in the Southeast. Elders from one of our country’s oldest African-American townships will tell their stories of segregation, kinship and faith as a group of men and women, ages 85 to 106, share their experiences as lifelong residents of Winter Park. The 16 participating ‘elders’ are part of “The Sage Project: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories,” hosted by the Hannibal Square Heritage Center from May 11 to Sept. 1 in partnership with the Winter Park Historical Association. The Central Florida Daylily Society is holding its annual daylily show at the Orlando Garden Club located at 710 E. Rollins St. on May 12. There will be a plant sale from 10:30 to 3 p.m. and the daylily show, which will feature hundreds of daylily blooms, will be open to the public from noon to 3 p.m.

AAUW Orlando/Winter Park Branch hosts its wrap-up program of the 2011-2012 year on Saturday, May 12, at 9 a.m. at Fellowship Hall, First Congregational Church, 225 S. Interlachen Ave., Winter Park. To help Stamp Out Hunger! This year, letter carriers are calling on Central Florida residents to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods — such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal — next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12. Local letter carriers will take them to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Monday, May 14, is an exciting day for SunRail as two major events are scheduled. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is hosting a Transit-Oriented Development forum to connect station communities to potential vendors and developers who might be interested in development opportunities around SunRail stations. The event takes place from 1:30 to 4 p.m. at the Sheraton Orlando Downtown Hotel, located at 400 W. Livingston St., Orlando.

The second event is an Open House at the SunRail City Center, a community drop-in center in downtown Orlando, featuring all things SunRail. “The Longest Hatred,” part of the Great Lecture Series, is 7 p.m. May 15 at University Club of Winter Park. The presentation will be by Kenneth Hanson, Associate Professor of the Judaic Studies Program at UCF.
