The Winter Park boys’ basketball team has been destroying competition on its way toward the playoffs. With a 20-3 record overall and 4-1 in Class 8A District 5, they’re just narrowly behind Oak Ridge.

The district’s top two teams had been tied before their showdown Jan. 24.

Oak Ridge took the lead early in that game, ripping out a 35-28 gap by halftime on the strength of Antonio Blakeney’s shooting. He would end up with 25 points. But the Wildcats had their offense humming too thanks to Deandre Turner and Austin Goodluck, shooting a respective 20 and 17 points. Spencer Rivers and Elijah Farley had nine points each.

Closing in on the regular season finale, the Wildcats were at Olympia at press time Tuesday. They’ll face Dr. Phillips at home at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 31.
