MARCH 10

Come see “The Hobbit” written by Patricia Gray and adapted from the beloved novel by J.R.R Tolkien on March 10, 11, and 12 at 7 p.m. with ASL interpreters on March 10 and a matinee performance on March 12 at 2 p.m. Set in the spectacular wonder of Middle Earth, one brave hobbit accompanied by a band of dwarves and a magical ring embark on the adventure of a lifetime. This experience is for audiences of all ages. The show will be held by the Winter Park High School theater department at 2100 Summerfield Road in Winter Park. Tickets are $10 at the door. Enjoy jazz under the stars at the Alfond Inn on Friday, March 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. In addition to live music, the event will feature unlimited select wine and beer as well as roasted chicken, smoked pig and vegetarian selection. Join the UCP of Central Florida in support of its mission to empower children by attending Poker at the Palace on March 11 from 6 to 10 p.m. Emmy nominated actress Cheryl Hines and other celebrities will be going “all-in” at the Buena Vista Palace & Spa in Orlando in an effort to benefit local children. Join the Southeastern Guide Dogs for its annual walkathon, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on March 12 at Lake Baldwin Park. Dog-lovers, families and members of the community are invited to enjoy a day filled with food, entertainment and lots of tail-wagging. There is no cost for registration.

The public is invited to attend the Orlando/Winter Park AAUW Literary Luncheon on March 12 at 11:30 a.m. Proceeds from the luncheon, held at the University Club of Winter Park, will support educational scholarships and grants as well as the Legal Advocacy Fund. The featured guest speaker will be Linda L. Dunlap, author of “Rail Walking and Other Stories.” Dunlap has received numerous awards for her written works, which have appeared in literary and university presses across the country. Oviedo-Winter Springs Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the 22nd annual Taste of Oviedo. Taste will be at Oviedo Mall on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This year’s event, sponsored by Air Flow Designs Heating and Air Conditioning, will offer a wide array of local tastes from restaurants, caterers and food trucks. Come out from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Maitland Community Park for a self-defense awareness and familiarization exchange (S.A.F.E.) class. Class size is limited to 12 and the class is for women ages 18 or older. The class is free. To register, call 407-539-0042.

The first semi-annual panelist-led conversation, dedicated to developing strategies to unite the Orlando arts community, will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at 2:30 p.m. The event is free of charge and will be hosted at the University of Central Florida’s School of Visual Arts Gallery in room 132. Moderated by Orlando artist Richard Munster, the symposium will be an hour-long conversation between guest panelists. Food and drinks will be provided after the discussion. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and network with panelists.

The Central Florida Chapter of the American Association of Individual Investors will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, March 16, at 7 p.m. at the University Club of Winter Park. School is closed, but the JCC is open! Come spend the day with your friends at Orange and Seminole County Spring Break Camp from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Monday, March 21, to Friday, March 25, at the Roth Family JCC, located at 851 N. Maitland Ave. in Maitland. From art, to sports, to science, kids are sure to have a blast! Pizza lunch is included. The JCC will also be hosting field trip days including a visit to Boardwalk Bowl on Tuesday, March 22, and the Orlando Shakespeare Theater on Thursday, Mach 24. Dress in your most spectacular hat for a delightful afternoon celebrating seniors at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, located at 9700 International Drive in Orlando. The Rosen Plaza Hotel hosts the ninth annual High Tea & Hats event to benefit Seniors First with exotic teas, scrumptious tea sandwiches, desserts and fresh fruit. Guests will participate in the annual stylish hat contest and parade plus enjoy the Itsy Bitsy Hat Parade, just for kids. Bid on fabulous items available in the silent and chance auctions, and purchase tickets for a chance to the “Wall of Wine” and the Grand Prize Package, all while raising funds to support Seniors First in its mission to maintain seniors’ dignity and independence with nutritional, home improvement and other much-needed support. For six consecutive spring Friday evenings (March 25 through April 29), visitors to the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art can enjoy not only free admission from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. but also live music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. In addition to the music on those nights, the Morse will offer curator tours of the exhibition Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall at 7 p.m. The April 8 programming also includes a family tour of selected galleries and a demonstration on the technique of making leaded-glass lampshades with a free take-home art activity for participants. In addition to the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Open House March 18 through 20, the Museum also will offer free admission on Easter weekend March 25 through March 27, with live music and a curator tour set for Good Friday.
