Left over Halloween candy?

If you have too much candy to physically consume or are looking for a great cause to donate the sweets to, don’t forget about Operation Gratitude. You can drop off candy and letters of appreciation for our American service men and women who are currently deployed in the hostile and remote regions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Items are accepted between now and Saturday, Nov. 12, at one of the following Winter Park locations:

  • Station 61 > 343 West Canton Ave.

  • Station 62 > 300 South Lakemont Ave.

  • Station 64 > 1439 Howell Branch Road

  • City Hall > 401 Park Ave. S.

The collected items will be shipped to American service members in order to lift morale and put smiles on the faces of our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines currently deployed overseas.

Thank you to 15-year-old resident Andrew Weinstock, who has organized this worthy cause since 2009.

WPPD launches Click It or Ticket

The Winter Park Police Department will be joining state and local law enforcement agencies and highway safety groups in supporting an aggressive national “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign. Stepped-up law enforcement activities will be conducted during the 2010 “Click It or Ticket” mobilization period from Monday, Nov. 14, through Sunday, Nov. 27.

Seat belts are the single most effective piece of safety equipment in a vehicle, yet Winter Park’s seat belt usage is typically measured at around 80 percent, leading into enforcement activities such as “Click it or Ticket.”

Kids have to be buckled up, too. Your child seat can be installed by a certified police officer at WPPD by appointment. This is a longtime service that has been provided for many years at no cost to the public.

Seat belts clearly save lives. When worn correctly, seat belts have been proven to reduce the risk of fatal injury to front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent, and by 60 percent in pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans.

WPPD is encouraging compliance in lieu of having to issue citations as costly reminders of a law that everyone should be following every time they are in a vehicle.
