On Veterans Day Winter Park High School's Junior ROTC and Color Guard paid tribute to more than a dozen veterans at Easter Seals Day Break.
On a bright, crisp Friday afternoon, Veteran’s Day 2011, Winter Park High School’s Junior ROTC and Color Guard paid tribute to more than a dozen veterans at Easter Seals Day Break at the Miller Center in Winter Park with a half hour performance showcasing their drill and marching skills.
Day Break member Frank, who donned the Army uniform he wore more than 60 years ago during the Korean War, looked on with a smile on his face, while former Navy member Don shared stories with a few of the students after congratulating them on a performance well done.
Bill, a retired Marine Corporal, posed for pictures with the team while his daughter shared memories of her father’s service. The stories brought tears to the students’ eyes as she told them how much their visit meant to all of the members at Day Break, most of whom are living with Alzheimer’s.
Kristin Kane, activities director at Easter Seals Day Break said, “We [Easter Seals] partner with local schools not only to stay in touch with the community, but also for our intergenerational programming, which our members absolutely love! With so many veterans and veterans’ wives in our program, we felt this was a great opportunity for them and a great learning experience for the students as well.”
