June 25 City Commission meeting highlights

There was a City Commission meeting June 25. Below are a few highlights of decisions made:

Mayor’s Report

• Fire-Rescue Lieutenant Jim Duba was recognized for his 35 years of devoted service and wished well as he begins his retirement. Thursday, July 5, was proclaimed Jim Duba Day in Winter Park in celebration of his service to the community.

• July was proclaimed Parks & Recreation Month.

Consent Agenda

• The minutes of May 14 and June 11 were approved with an amendment to the May 14 minutes.

• The purchase, contracts and bids were approved (a complete list can be found at cityofwinterpark.org > Government > City Commission > Agenda Packets).

• The request of the Hamilton Place Homeowner’s Association to install new 8-foot vinyl fencing across the rear of the properties was approved.

Action items requiring discussion

• The creation of a Sustainability Advisory Board by combining the Keep Winter Park Beautiful Board and the Environmental Review Board was approved with an ordinance to follow at the next meeting.

• Lake Island Park was approved to be named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in honor of his memory and accomplishments.

• A potential policy that governs City Commission written communication was discussed and no action was taken.

Public Hearings

• The second reading of the ordinance to vacate a 3-foot electric utility distribution easement located at 1302 W. Fairbanks Ave. for the new McDonald’s® Restaurant was approved.

• The Conditional Use Approval request of Vision Development and Management, LLC, to develop up to a two-story, 12,000-square-foot building with a new branch bank location as a redevelopment of the property at 957 W. Fairbanks Ave. was approved.

City Hall closed

Please note that City Hall will be closed and yard trash services will not be provided Wednesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. City offices will re-open at 8 a.m., Thursday, July 5. The city of Winter Park wishes everyone a safe and happy Independence Day.

Olde Fashioned 4th of July!

The city of Winter Park will present their 17th annual Olde Fashioned 4th of July Celebration Wednesday, July 4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in Central Park. Mayor Ken Bradley will lead a special presentation at 9:15 a.m. from the main stage, which will include a tribute to the city of Winter Park’s 125th anniversary. Wear your red, white and blue, bring a blanket or beach chair, and gather with family and friends to enjoy this Winter Park tradition.

The annual celebration will feature live patriotic music performed by the Bach Festival Brass Band and Bach Festival Choir, horse-drawn wagon rides, Orlando Cloggers, Rockin’ Roadster Road Show and much more! Children’s activities will include the annual bicycle parade at 9 a.m. (lineup begins at 8:30 a.m.) from City Hall to Central Park, as well as fun games and inflatables.

Free hot dogs, watermelon and water will available for all to enjoy, while supplies last. Chips and other snacks will also be available for purchase. Families and friends can stroll along Park Avenue and Hannibal Square to shop and dine at the wide selection of shops and eateries.

In addition, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art will present their Independence Day Open House. The museum, which is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of work by American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany, will provide free admission to its galleries from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winter Park Country Club Golf Camp

If you are a golfer 6 to 18 years of age, the Winter Park Country Club, located at 761 Old England Ave., is offering a hands-on camp beginning Monday, July 16, weekly thru Monday, Aug. 13. Golfers will learn the proper techniques for chipping, putting, full swing, golf etiquette, USGA® rules and course play.
