March 26 City Commission meeting highlights
There was a City Commission meeting held on March 26 at 3:30 p.m. at the Rachel D. Murrah Civic Center. Below are a few highlights of decisions that were made:

The minutes of March 12, 2012 were approved.
The various purchases and contracts were approved (a complete list can be found at cityofwinterpark.org > Government > City Commission > Agenda Packets).
The amendment of the development agreement and re-execution of the air space agreement for the 444 W. New England and 362 S. Pennsylvania avenues buildings was approved.
The budget adjustment for the police department’s participation in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Task Force was approved.
The budget adjustment to appropriate fees collected for fire-inspector training was approved.
• Action Items
The fee waiver request for the Crealde School of Art annual benefit auction was approved.
The four objectives designed to set the agenda for the Central Florida ULI Technical Assistance Panel two-day workshop for the West Fairbanks area were approved.
• Public Hearings
The new fee schedule effective April 1 was approved.
The request of Winter Park Town Center LTD for Conditional Use approval to build a bank and new restaurant with drive-thru as a redevelopment of the former Border’s Books at the Winter Park Village, 500 N. Orlando Ave., was approved.
The resolution executing a Public Transportation Joint Participation Agreement with the State of Florida Department of Transportation for artwork at the Winter Park train station/Amtrak station was approved.
The first reading of the ordinance amending Chapter 22 to incorporate the Florida Building Code with certain administrative and technical amendments was approved with a modification.

April 4 City Commission Strategic Planning Session
The City Commission will have a Strategic Planning Session from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4, at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave.
The public is invited to attend, however no public comment will be taken.
Newly renovated pro shop ribbon-cutting ceremony
The Parks & Recreation Department will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly renovated Winter Park Country Club Pro Shop located at 761 Old England Ave. at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 6. Light refreshments will be served and patrons will have the opportunity to compete for prizes in a putting contest.
City staff worked in conjunction with General Contractor Frank Roark, architects Fielding W. Featherston and James Cornete of Process Architecture, and Steve Feller to coordinate historic features of the building with new construction. The facility has been strategically updated to maintain the character, charm and history of the old “starter house.” The original chimney and wood dating back to the late 1930s were salvaged and refurbished to accent the main room. New changing rooms and restroom facilities were installed, and the golf club storage area was completely renovated.
The opening of the newly renovated pro shop will make the space that was being used in the clubhouse available once again for event rentals.
Hop on over to the 58th annual Easter Egg Hunt
The city is proud to announce the 58th annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 7, in beautiful Central Park West Meadow located in downtown Winter Park.
The hunt will begin at 10 a.m. with the official starting signal. Children with special needs are also encouraged to join in the fun. More than 10,000 stuffed eggs will be placed throughout Central Park. As always, children who come up empty-handed will still be able to enjoy special treats at the designated area.

Community center pool grand opening celebration
A Pool Grand Opening Celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave.
The center, a 38,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility, was opened to the public in October 2011, when the outdoor temperatures were too cold to swim. Now that spring has arrived, the cool fun can begin at the multipurpose pool facility, which includes a zero-depth entry, lap lanes, spray play with recreation area and changing rooms.
Festivities at the grand opening celebration will include a free underwater egg hunt for children of all ages. Swimmers are encouraged to arrive early to sign up for the underwater egg hunt and register for a recreation I.D.

East Morse Boulevard construction to begin April 9
As part of the East Morse Boulevard Improvement Project, construction on the stormwater treatment phase to eliminate pollutants from entering Lake Osceola will begin Monday, April 9. Weather permitting, this phase of the project is expected to be complete by Saturday, April 28.
During construction, which will include deep excavation and a large crane operation, the city will accommodate vehicle access to the Whispering Waters east parking garage, limited parking at the end of East Morse Boulevard, and access to the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour.
To complete the improvement project, installation of decorative streetlights, new landscaping and asphalt resurfacing will be scheduled following the completion of the stormwater treatment system construction.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Task Force public input meetings
On Oct. 10, 2011, the City Commission unanimously voted to appoint a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (MLK) Task Force for the purpose of recommending an appropriate naming opportunity of a city street, park or venue that would honor the memory and accomplishments of Dr. King.
The MLK Task Force will host a public input meeting from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, at the Winter Park Community Center located at 721 W. New England Ave.
Results from the first public input meeting will then be presented for further discussion at a second public input meeting being held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 24, at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church located at 421 S. Pennsylvania Ave.
The suggested criteria for this naming opportunity include:
• The street, park or venue should have significant visibility.
• No street, park or venue already named after one of the founding or other prominent families should be renamed.
• If a street is selected, the number of businesses/residences that will have to incur the inconvenience and cost of an address change should be minimized.
• If a street is selected for renaming, it should either be the whole street or at least start at one end of the street. This would avoid potential public safety challenges created when a street has its current name at one end, a different name in the middle, and then returns to the current name at the other end.
The public is encouraged to attend both public input meetings to share ideas and offer input on this naming opportunity in honor of Dr. King.
