New agency

On April 16, the U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services established the Administration for Community Living that created a single agency with the goal of increasing access to community support systems and full participation, while focusing attention and resources on the unique needs of older Americans and people with disabilities. Senior Expo at the Central Florida Fairgrounds: The annual Senior Expo is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 2-3 at 4603 W. Colonial Drive in Orlando. A free Olive Garden lunch is available for the first 500 people each day. Free admission.

The Orange County Retired Educators Association will have their Annual Spring Luncheon at noon on Thursday, May 3, at College Park United Methodist Church, 644 W. Princeton St., in Orlando. It’s $14. For reservations, call 407-644-7092.

MAY 5

An AARP Driver Safety Program will be held 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, at the Plymouth Apartments, 1550 Gay Road, in Winter Park. The program helps participants refine driving skills and develop safe driving habits. Upon completion of the course, Florida drivers 50 or older will be eligible for vehicle insurance discounts. MAY 9

Want to communicate better with elders? Take a 90-minute hands-on senior sensitivity class and personally experience some of the most common health concerns of elders, including hearing loss, limited vision and arthritis. It’s from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on May 9 at the downtown Orlando Public Library, in the third floor Albertson Room. To RSVP, call 407-835-7481.

The Jewish Pavilion will be hosting a free workshop on Brain Healthy Living at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 10, at Serenades by Sonata, 425 Ronald Reagan Blvd., in Longwood. Brenda Nieman, a certified Alzheimer’s disease trainer, will address the group. The workshop is open to the entire community, but an RSVP is needed so Serenades can plan for refreshments. “Tips on being a savvy health advocate” will be presented by Betsy McKeeby, RN, Parish Nurse at First United Methodist of Winter Park at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, at the downtown Orlando Library, 101 E. Central Blvd, third floor Albertson Room. Parish nurses act as health counselors, educators, community resource liaisons and integrators of faith and healing. You are invited to attend a presentation on running by Jack Gallagher on Thursday, May 31, at 7 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary Parish Center on Park Avenue. Jack will turn 78 in a few months and has been participating in the local running scene since 1987. Orange County’s annual hurricane expo is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 1, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 2 at the Fashion Square Mall. You can talk directly with state, national and local disaster planning staff to learn how you can prepare.

The Maitland Senior Center presents a program for elders on the second Friday of the month that is staffed by counselors from S.H.I.N.E. (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders).
