On Thursday, Oct. 11, Maitland City Council member Phil Bonus resigned from office. This sad occurrence comes after years of dedication and hard work that Phil has given to our city and community. The resignation makes it possible for the city to move forward and begin a healing process following weeks of media attention and citizen concern. I want to thank Phil for doing what was best for his family and for the city of Maitland.
I also want to thank Councilman Bonus for his public service during the last four and a half years. While on Council, he dedicated himself to the pursuit of fiscal responsibility in all aspects of our city budget and to protecting our citizens from any tax increases during this difficult economy.
Over the years, Councilman Bonus and his family have contributed positively to our community in many capacities. He has joined numerous civic organizations and has worked tirelessly to make a difference by focusing on many worthwhile causes. Phil has served as a member and past president of the Maitland Men’s Club, an organization dedicated to community service with a special emphasis on helping children. The Men’s Club is instrumental in helping to provide pantries stocked with food for needy children in our schools.
Phil has also served as an active member of the Maitland Chamber of Commerce promoting business, jobs and special events in Maitland. In addition, Councilman Bonus and his family support the B.A.S.E. Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation’s art, music and theater education camp programs for special population children. I have been privileged to attend three of these camp presentations where the children put on a special play. It is magical what this camp has accomplished for these children!
I encourage all of our citizens to wish Councilman Bonus and his family well. As a city, we will continue to strive to make Maitland an even better place for our residents to call home.
