New app tracks babies

A new app from Winter Park Memorial Hospital makes it easier to track a baby’s development. “Baby Place,” allows moms to keep track of when the baby last ate or slept with an app on her phone. Download by visiting BabyPlaceApp.com

Local woman awarded for work in community

The 2012 Honorable U.S. Congresswoman Shirley A. Chisholm Award was awarded to Martha Olivia Bryant-Hall for effectuating changes in her community. Bryant-Hall was awarded by the Orlando Chapter of the National Congress of Black Women. Maitland Mayor Howard Schieferdecker presented Bryant-Hall with a proclamation declaring Saturday, Aug. 11, as “Martha Bryant-Hall Day” in Maitland.

Fairbanks Curve construction suspended

Paving work on the Interstate 4 Fairbanks Curve is suspended this week. Plans call for work to resume the night of Sunday, Nov. 4. The work is occurring on the westbound side, between Lee Road and Fairbanks Avenue. Work hours run between 10 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. The first phase of the project is already complete.

Assisted living facilities targets of theft

Assisted Living Facilities in Orange County have been targeted for credit card theft and fraud. Meko Jerran Hartfield, a 29-year-old black male, is the main suspect. Hartfield is known to dress as a female, wear medical scrub attire and wigs. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hartfield is asked to called Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477 or the Winter Park Police Department at 407-599-3282.

Ballot background available online

A customized sample ballot for every voter in Florida, accompanied by extensive information about the candidates and issues that they’ll be voting on, is the latest feature of the League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund’s nonpartisan online voter resource, BeReadyToVote.org. The website’s sample ballot tool provides information about candidates’ professional, career and educational information, as well as financial data about campaign contributions. Other items available on the site include written position statements, videos, answers to the League’s candidate questionnaire and links to the candidates’ websites.

Art festival awards $16,000 to Florida artists

The 39th Annual Autumn Art Festival awarded more than $16,000 to Florida artists participating in the two-day festival. Phil Parker from Flagler Beach was selected as Best in Show for his sculpture work. For more information, please visit autumnartfestival.com

Get your flu shot

Flu shots for children and adults are offered at the Orange County Health Department’s Central Health Center at 832 W. Central Blvd., Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a first-come, first-served walk-in basis. The immunization program is closed the second Friday of each month.

In Seminole County, flu shots for children and adults are available at the Seminole County Health Department’s Sanford location at 400 W. Airport Blvd., Monday through Friday 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. The immunization clinic is only open from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Two kidnappings in Winter Park area

A woman was kidnapped from the parking lot at 1650 Lee Road, Winter Park, at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 12. The suspect forced the victim into her vehicle, and then to drive to an ATM and withdraw money before driving to a separate location where the suspect left the car. The suspect was described as a “scruffy looking,” lean, 6-foot-tall black male in his mid- to late-20s. He was wearing both a long and short sleeved black T-shirt, green pants and a black knit cap with a short bill.

A woman was kidnapped from 1675 Lee Road, Winter Park at 5:46 a.m. on Oct. 25. The suspect approached the victim from behind and with a handgun forced her into the passenger side of her vehicle. The suspect (in pictured police sketch) then drove the victim to an unknown location before exiting the vehicle. The suspect was described as a 6-foot-tall black male around 25 years old with a 1-inch afro.

Scholarship for UCF student

The Women’s Executive Council presented a $1,500 scholarship to Amy Bonilla Torres, a freshman accounting major at the University of Central Florida.

Help seniors file their taxes

Volunteers are needed for AARP’S Tax-Aide Program. Tax-Aide counselors help prepare tax returns and assist with filing requirements for older taxpayers and others. Individuals with an aptitude for tax preparation, experience in filing personal returns and good communication skills are urged to sign up. AARP membership is not required to be a volunteer with this program. Volunteer counselors are trained by AARP in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. An orientation will be held in December and training for volunteer counselors begins around Jan. 7 in the Orlando area.
