Yard waste collection in Maitland

As we are in the midst of storm season, the city of Maitland would like to remind residents of a few rules that will make curbside collection of your yard waste easier.

• Residential yard waste is collected each Wednesday in Maitland.

• Grass clippings, leaves and other loose vegetative materials must be placed in containers. Appropriate containers include a city-provided 96-gallon cart or resident-provided container(s) not larger than 35 gallons. Lids must be able to be closed on all containers. Sealed plastic bags holding less than 40 pounds can also be used.

• If there is a storm, normal pick-up times will be extended because of the volume of items in need of being disposed. In some cases, yard waste will not be picked-up until after 8 p.m. During this period, your patience will be appreciated.

• Remember, the office staff and yard waste haulers cannot control the volume that must be taken to the disposal site or the additional time needed to wait in line, as they and other towns dispose of their increased yard waste.

After the storm, do I still need to follow the collection rules?

Yes! Unless the governor has declared Maitland a disaster area, as with a hurricane, you will still need to tie, bundle and containerize your yard waste.

Even the palm fronds and branches that fell off our trees during the storm?

Yes! You will still need to tie, bundle and containerize your storm waste even if the storm caused a great deal of damage.

There’s just too much for me to handle! Can’t the city help?

Yes! Our waste haulers can send a special truck to pick up large volumes that have been placed on the curb. Call the city for additional prices. Payment must be made before pick up.

Water saving tips that can save you time and money!

Using less water reduces your utility bill and saves you money. Reducing your water consumption can be as easy as following the tips below:

• Monitor your water bill for unusually high use. Your bill and water meter are tools that can help you discover leaks.

• Make sure there are water-saving aerators on all of your faucets.

• If your toilet flapper doesn't close after flushing, replace it.

• If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.

• Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.

Don’t use running water to thaw food. Defrost food in the refrigerator for water efficiency and food safety.

• Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.

• For cold drinks, keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.

• When running a bath, plug the tub before turning the water on and then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.

• When doing laundry, match the water level to the size of the load.

• Teach your children to turn off faucets tightly after each use.
