Louis Roney: Side glances

On Sept. 6, lack of attendance motivated Obama’s speech venue to be changed from a football stadium to a smaller convention arena. With TV bringing the big doings right into our living rooms, it’s a wonder that people take their cars out of the garage at all. The prexy’s words “we’re all in this together” were said with energy — or was it trepidation?

My grandmother

Sunday, Sept. 9, was National Grandparents Day. I don’t need a special day to bring my own grateful thoughts back to all that my grandmother meant to me during her long life. She was my mother’s mother, and the only grandparent surviving my childhood. My parents were wonderful in every way, and my grandmother brought something extra to my sister and me. She passed her fine learning along to us as well as a special wisdom that only grandparents seem to possess in their philosophy of life. While at times she probably spoiled us, she managed concomitantly to emphasize a valuable input of wise restraint.

Watching live football

When I was playing high school football on Fridays, we listened to radio broadcasts of football Saturday afternoons — one game every weekend. If we wanted to see a game, we had to go to one. Both Rollins and Stetson had formidable football teams, and Rollins often used Orlando’s Tinker Field for night games.

Dangerous times

Are there arcane connections between the Muslim world and the top keepers of our state secrets? Inexplicable things happening may indicate that there are. In my opinion our present Washington forces are the worst since the reign of Jimmy Carter, and today’s appeasing political climate is much more dangerous than Carter’s ever was.

Iran continues unhindered in its quest for nuclear power. The Iranians have already told us what they are going to do to Israel and have expressed equal contempt for “Americans.” It would not surprise this commentator if Israel made a preemptive strike on Iran to destroy at least one vital part of Iran’s nuclear production facilities. Such action would, of course, involve the U.S.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and Hitler declared war on the U.S., our Democratic politicians had so reduced our military’s abilities to defend ourselves that we were sitting ducks. President Obama’s words of appeasement of late send shudders of dread up my spine, as an attack these days could be immediately and completely devastating. The timeless warning of great Harvard philosopher George Santayana should never be forgotten: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Flagging change

Some powers that be have seen fit to alter the American flag: For political campaign purposes the Obama logo in the upper left-hand corner replaces the 50 stars! Has our beloved country ever been in such irrational and disrespectful hands as it is at present? What would be left of the U.S. if we gave Obama four more years?

I don’t understand women!

Those countries with socialized medicine (Canada, England, etc.) have a success rate in curing breast cancer of 66 percent. American medicine today has a success rate of some 85 percent plus. Why on God’s earth would women want to bring socialized Obamacare here?

Video is not to blame

The White House is disseminating the idea that “the video” caused the tumult in the Middle East, whereas the video is the excuse not the reason. Oops! The prexy changed his tune — it was not “the video” after all!
