APRIL 4

As part of its First Thursdays monthly event, the Orlando Museum of Art, located at 2416 N. Mills Ave., will feature “For the Birds,” Thursday, April 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. Attendees can do the following: listen to live music from Please Respect Our Decadence; enjoy foodtrauck faire; watch presentations by various artists; and learn how to do hands-on projects. Handcrafted beers, wine, soft drinks and water will be available for purchase throughout the evening. Admission to First Thursdays, which includes admission to the OMA’s featured exhibition, Contemporary Glass Sculpture: Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Studio Glass, is $10 for non-members and free for OMA members. The Art & History Museums – Maitland’s next Ladies’ Art Lounge will be Friday, April 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Attendees will create some of the most popular projects posted to social networking site Pinterest.com, such as home décor, jewelry and artwork. The Leadership Winter Park Golf Classic returns for its second year on Friday, April 19, at Dubsdread Golf Course, located at 549 W. Par St. in Orlando. Central Florida Community Orchestra will present “Un Spectable de Musique Internationale” Friday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at Downtown Baptist Church, located at 120 E. Pine St. in Orlando. The concert will feature classics, including: Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of the Nobles,” Brahms’ Hungarian Dances No. 5 and 6; Rossini’s “Overture to The Barber of Seville”; and Stravinsky’s “Berceuse” and “Finale” from “The Firebird Suite.” Conducted by Justin Muchoney, “Un Spectacle de Musique Internationale” will be performed for one night only. “pARTicipation: Sideshow of the Senses,” voted Best Arts Event in the DailyCity.com’s Best of Orlando 2013, will be Saturday, April 6, at the A&H’s Maitland Arts Center campus, located at 231 W. Packwood Ave. The event will showcase local visual artists, food and intriguing performances. Attendees can enjoy a progressive dining experience with cuisine by chef Jamie McFadden of Cuisiniers. Hundreds of Central Floridians will come together Saturday, April 6, at 7:30 a.m. to honor wounded heroes from Iraq, Afghanistan and other conflicts at the 4th Annual Central Florida Navy League Wounded Warrior Lone Sailor 5K. The event will be at Harbor Park, which is around Lake Baldwin. This event will honor wounded warrior heroes and Orlando’s rich Navy heritage. The Holocaust Center’s Yom HaShoah program on Sunday, April 7, at 4 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, located at 851 N. Maitland Ave., will feature Louise Borden, the keynote speaker and author of the new book “His Name Was Raoul Wallenberg: Courage, Rescue and Mystery During World War II.” One of the unsolved mysteries of the Holocaust is “What happened to Raoul Wallenberg?” The Swedish diplomat, credited with saving up to 100,000 Jewish lives, disappeared at the end of the war. But it is his life, not his death, which raises the most interesting questions. The general public is welcome, and there will be no admission charged. The program will also include traditional music, candle lighting, and awards for the winners of the 2013 Yom HaShoah Student Creative Arts Contest. The Orlando Area Historical Rose Society will meet Sunday, April 7, at Harry P. Leu Gardens, located at 1920 N. Forest Ave., to view “Digital Photography in the Rose Garden,” presented by Al Whitcomb of the Tampa Rose Society. Al has conducted the Deep South District of the American Rose Society photo contest for the past three years and has won awards for his rose photos at both the local and national level. His presentation contains several example photos and describes a process and tips for optimizing your digital photos. Through Tuesday, April 9, Art & History Museums — Maitland will feature a small exhibition to honor artist Maury Hurt, who recently passed away. The exhibition will feature Maury Hurt works from the A&H’s permanent collection and a life-size portrait of Hurt by Barbara Tiffany. Call 407-539-2181 for more information on this exhibition.

APRIL 10

Brio Tuscan Grille, located at 480 N. Orlando Ave. in Winter Park, will host Wine on Wednesdays through April 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. to raise money for New Hope for Kids’ programs. This weekly event provides select wines for guests in return for their $8 donation per glass, and all proceeds benefit New Hope for Kids. Call 407-622-5611 for more information on this weekly event.

“Life in the Fast Lane: The Art of David DeLong” will be featured at the Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens, located at 633 Osceola Ave. in Winter Park, through April 14. DeLong was one of the first American road racers, starting on a pre-war BMW he bought while on duty in Europe. An artist by trade, he was able to combine his love of racing with his talent. A technically skilled draftsman, painter and printmaker, his works on display offer an insider’s view of racing from the 1950s until 2001 when he passed away.
