Since I have been on the topic of interviewing, I would like to share another interview pet peeve – being articulate in your speaking.
I like, um, don’t, um, think it is a great idea to like, um, use the words “like” and “um” frequently in your interview. It is like, um, very annoying. Nervousness aside, it is important to be able to speak effectively.
Practice can make perfect for the interview process. I recently interviewed a very charming young lady who spent a good portion of our time together trying to think of the right words to say. At least that is what she told me. I spent my time wishing that she would just be herself and stop trying to think up big words to impress me.
Public speaking is a fear for many, and it can be intimidating. Interviews are intimidating too. Joining a group like Toastmasters International or practicing mock-interviews with a friend can help you to improve your skills tremendously.
Researching a company in advance can also help to increase your confidence in the interview process. Stay away from buzzwords and just be straightforward and keep it simple when you answer questions. This will help you to look less nervous.
On the flip side, if you know your interviewer, it is not an excuse to let your guard down or become too comfortable. You may end up not getting the job as a result of being too casual.
Practice, practice, practice and you will see great results – or at least become a better speaker.
Take care and best wishes-
