The unemployment numbers are dropping to the lowest levels since 2008, yet they fail to reflect the reality of what is going on in our communities. In Central Florida, more than 93,000 people are unemployed and many more are working below their capacity to earn. The rate for people who have fallen off the rolls or work part time when they want full time is six points higher than the regular rates.

The upside is there are more now-hiring signs in the windows. The down side is, most positions are part time. The other move employers are taking is requiring potential employees to pay for their own background checks and drug screenings. This is similar to the welfare process being hotly debated in Florida. Reimbursement often happens after someone is employed 90 days. One company told me their background check is $80 and people have to wait two weeks for their first check. This is very challenging for someone who is unemployed.

Recently several groups came together to promote innovative solutions to the jobs crisis by raising awareness for non-profits through a site called JobRaising.com. Christian HELP was selected as one of the 74 non-profits to compete nationwide. We would love your support!

The job search is most successful when you have a plan in place. It is important to target the companies you want to work for, research them, tailor your resume, and be prepared for the interview.
