After election day on March 12, Maitland will see two new faces on its City Council, as four candidates qualified to run for the city’s two open seats. Councilman Ivan Valdes will be elected unopposed as his only challenger dropped out of the race Wednesday morning.

Familiar local names and faces – from city volunteers to well-known attorneys – fill out the ballot, along with some political newcomers hoping to break through the race to the dais. Seats 3 and 4 are up grabs. Councilwoman Bev Reponen will term-out having served six years in Seat 3.

Following the election, Seat 4 will host its third new face in less than half a year. Councilman Jeff Flowers, who took the seat in October following former-Councilman Phil Bonus’ scandal-laden resignation the same month, will not run for the seat – making way for another new name on Council. Running for the seat are city volunteer and real-estate community manager Charlie Adkins, and attorney John P. Lowndes.

Both putting their names into the local politics for the first time running for Seat 3 are local civic and social coordinator Renee Stein Charlan, and Maitland attorney and mom Joy Goff-Marcil.

“I’m concerned about how the decisions are made, and I want to be a part of it,” Marcil said.
