AUG. 1

Camp J Family BBQ is coming up at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1 at the Jewish Community Center in South Orlando. It includes hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, drinks, snacks and dessert. It’s only $25 per family for JCC members. Visit orlandojcc.org for more information.

It’s back-to-school shopping time this weekend, as tax-free weekend removes sales tax from essential back-to-school items to help parents save money.

Hey Arnold Schwarzenegger Fans…here’s an event just for you! Plans are underway for the 9th Annual Arnold Day set for Saturday, Aug. 3 (the Saturday after Arnold’s actual birthday on July 30), at Lazy Moon in Orlando. Each year, Arnold Fans travel from near and far to attend this much anticipated celebration that has become a tradition. Watch you favorite Arnold classic films throughout the day on a large screen; participate in an Arnold look-alike, trivia and quote contests; indulge in a special Lazy Moon Arnold Pizza – a gigantic meat-filled pie; and don’t forget the brews and birthday cake. Baldwin Park’s First Friday Festival and Art Stroll hits the streets of downtown Baldwin Park from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, featuring art, music, food and wine up and down New Broad Street to Lake Baldwin. Life of a Firefighter” at 11 a.m. on, Monday, Aug. 5, at the Eatonville Branch of Orange County Public Library will let you meet real firefighters and find out what it takes to fight the heat. Presented by the Orlando Fire Department, Orange County Fire Rescue, Winter Garden Fire Rescue, and Maitland Fire Rescue. Popcorn Flicks in Central Park features the original classic “Shrek” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Central Park Main Stage in Winter Park. The Art & History Museums – Maitland proudly opens two exhibitions highlighting the city of Eatonville. Images of Eatonville: Then & Now is held in the A&H’s Maitland Art Center Galleries from Friday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Sept. 29. The exhibition Founding of Eatonville, is held in the A&H’s Maitland Historical Museum from Friday, Aug. 16, through Sunday, Oct. 6.

For a limited time this summer, the Orlando Science Center will remain open for extended hours on Friday and Saturday through Aug. 17. Guests will have more time to explore four levels of exhibits, watch a Hollywood feature-length film in the Digital Adventure Theater: A National Geographic Experience, see stars and planets in the Crosby Observatory, and experience our newest traveling exhibits.
