Brain disorder grant
Congressman John Mica announced that the University of Central Florida has been awarded a competitive continuation grant for clinical research related to neurological disorders. This grant, in the amount of $314,491, is awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Higher learners
The following students were named to the Dean’s List of Emory College, the undergraduate, liberal arts college of Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., for the 2012 fall semester: Martin Sigalow of Maitland, and Steven Crist of Winter Park.
Erin Degler of Maitland was named to the Honor List of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University located in Oxford, Ga., for the 2012 fall semester.
Lilian L Wu of Winter Park has been named to second honors on the Clark University Dean’s List. This selection marks outstanding academic achievement during the Fall 2012 semester.
Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Ind., named Stephanie O’Sullivan to the Dean’s List for the fall 2012 semester. Stephanie is the daughter of John and Denise O’Sullivan of Winter Park.
Food for families
Jewish Family Services is conducting a food drive, in partnership with the Feinstein Challenge, through April 30. The drive’s goal is to provide 30,000 meals to children, families and individuals in the Central Florida area.
Conversations in the cloud
Florida Virtual School (FLVS) recently launched a new blog: The Virtual Voice. The purpose of the blog is to cultivate intellectual discussion amongst parents, community leaders and industry professionals.
Signing seniors
Five members of Trinity Prep’s Class of 2013 gathered with family, coaches, and fellow students on National Signing Day to sign letters of intent to continue their athletic careers in college. Jack O’Connor of Winter Park committed to Swarthmore College for swimming; Madeleine Loftus of Winter Park committed to Centre College for soccer; Rick Hord of Kissimmee committed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for baseball; and Daniel Salas of Winter Park committed to Dartmouth College for cross country and track.
