The city of Winter Park announces a summer of first-rate baseball and community-building fun with the 2015 Florida Collegiate Summer League. The Winter Park Diamond Dawgs’ season opener will be played against the Sanford River Rats at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at Rollins College Alfond Stadium, home field of the Diamond Dawgs, located at 801 Orange Ave. (at the corner of Orange and Aragon avenues) in Winter Park. The excitement will continue through the summer as the Diamond Dawgs host 22 home games. Tickets are just $5. Seniors and children under six years of age are just $3. AARP will hold a driver safety course from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, at the Altamonte Springs Mall C.O.P.S. Center, located at 451 E. Altamonte Drive. This program helps participants refresh driving skills and develop safer driving habits. Upon completion of this course, Florida drivers aged 50 or older may be eligible for vehicle insurance discounts. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Registration is required. The Baldwin Park First Friday Festival will be from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 5, along New Broad Street. First Friday is a monthly event where patrons can shop, stroll and sip their way through Baldwin Park's beautiful Village Center. Join the biggest party celebrating kids with special needs at the 13th annual Make ‘M Smile Festival running from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, at the Lake Eola Amphitheater in downtown Orlando. This free event, put on by Nathaniel’s Hope, includes a “friendship stroll,” food, bounce houses, clowns and live music from contemporary Christian artists! For eight weeks in the summer, the Winter Park Public Library will host dozens of events and education programs designed to keep kids reading during the summer to avoid the “summer slide” in literacy and comprehension skills. As the summer season draws near, the Maitland Symphony Orchestra has been busy preparing a concert for all to hear at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at the Maitland Presbyterian Church, located at 341 N. Orlando Ave. The program includes favorite selections of the past: The Shostakovich “Festival Overture,” Elgar’s “Nimrod,” and Schumann’s Concerto in A Minor, with rising pianist Ian Levitan. Pick another favorite from “Forrest Gump” and “Star Trek Through the Ages” and enjoy another MSO favorite when guest erhu player Rui Yang performs in “Tea in Chinese Camp.” The concert is free, but donations are accepted. Make plans to get all “charged up” and join the city of Winter Park to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Winter Park’s electric utility! “Cake at the break” will be served during the City Commission meeting on Monday, June 8, at approximately 5 p.m. in the Chapman Room next to Commission Chambers in Winter Park City Hall. On June 1, 2005, the city “flipped the switch” to official ownership of the electric utility. Monday, June 1, 2015, marked the official 10-year anniversary of this monumental day. Grab your running shoes! The first-ever Central Florida chapter of the Shack Track and Field Club is coming to Winter Park. Shack Track and Field is a free community fitness club powered by Shake Shack, and will host runs each second Tuesday of the month. The first run is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, at 7 p.m. at the Shake Shack in Winter Park. Shake Shack is making the deal event sweeter by handing out a free single cup or cone of frozen custard to any runner who wears a Shack Track and Field T-shirt to the 3-5 mile run. The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce and Park Avenue Merchants Association invite you to sip, shop and stroll with your sweetheart on Thursday, June 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. Experience the charm of Park Avenue on a summer's eve. Spend the evening visiting your favorite Park Avenue area shops and restaurants. Discover new merchants, check out the latest fashions, gift ideas and seasonal menu items and enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres along the way. The event is taking place at the Park Avenue area in downtown Winter Park. Check-in is at the corner of Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue. Tickets are $25 each and are now on sale. Popcorn Flicks returns to Central Park for a showing of “Batman” on Thursday, June 11, at 8 p.m. The event is presented by Winter Park CRA and produced by Enzian Theater. Orange County is hosting the Mayor’s Neighborhood Challenge. A friendly, free competition which gives neighborhood and community organizations activities that can help their neighborhood thrive by becoming more healthy, green and involved. Participants fill out scorecards and are provided with toolkits. Neighborhoods that complete this Challenge will be recognized based on their level of achievement, and winners will be honored during the Orange County Community Conference on July 18 and receive great prizes.
