National Police Week Runs from May 10 to 16
This year National Police Week is Sunday, May 10, through Saturday, May 16. This is a week we remember and honor the sacrifices that U.S. law enforcement officers make as they protect us each day. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
On May 15, as authorized by federal law, all flags will be lowered to half-mast to honor those who have sacrificed their lives so that we may live in a safe community. Each year there are over 60,000 police officers assaulted resulting in over 16,000 injuries. In 2014, 117 officers were killed in the line of duty. On average, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty somewhere in the United States every 58 hours, approximately 150 officers per year.
The Maitland Police Department responded over 26,000 calls for service last year and respond to each call at a faster clip compared to their nationwide counterparts.
Police officers are on call 24 hours each and every day, including holidays. They respond to every type of call for service. Maitland has one of the lowest crime rates in Orange County.
The Maitland Police Department is dedicated to protecting our community and ensuring that Maitland remains a safe community to live, work and raise a family. The city of Maitland is doing its part to honor those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by recognizing National Police Week this week.
