Meet your Maitland first responders during EMS Week

EMS Week, presented by the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Association of EMTs, honors EMS professionals and the vital care they deliver to the highest standard to patients in our community. The city of Maitland recognizes EMS professionals this week and invites all residents to stop by Fire Station No. 45 on Independence Lane or Fire Station No. 47 on Fennell Street to meet your emergency medical providers and to tour the facilities. While you are at it, have your blood pressure checked for free!

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is an essential component of the services provided by our Maitland Fire-Rescue Department that makes our community stronger and more resilient. Each year, Maitland’s Fire-Rescue Department responds to close to 4,000 medical- or trauma-related calls annually and transports over 1,000 patients to local hospital emergency rooms. The members of the Fire-Rescue team engage in thousands of hours of specialized training to enhance their lifesaving skills and become the best care providers possible. Each and every hour of every day, Maitland’s citizens and business owners benefit from the work of our firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics.

Celebrate National Public Works Week

“Community Begins Here” is the theme for the 55th National Public Works Week, celebrated the third week of May by the American Public Works Association. The city of Maitland recognizes the 60 employees in the Public Works Department who operate the city’s public works programs and maintain its infrastructure.

The Public Works staff represents a quarter of the city’s workforce within nine divisions: Administration, Water Production/Distribution, Wastewater Collection, Stormwater/Lakes Management, Streets and Facilities Maintenance, Fleet Maintenance, Grounds Maintenance, Arbor Care, and City Engineering Services. Public Works provides Maitland residents with drinking, irrigation, wastewater, and fire-protection water services. Staff is responsible for upkeep of lakes, storm drains, and wastewater-collection systems within Maitland proper. It maintains more than 110 sites including city buildings, grounds, rights-of-way, ball fields, and parks. Similarly, the staff repairs and maintains vehicles and equipment, city-owned streets, and city-owned properties. The Public Works Department also provides staff liaisons for two resident boards, the Transportation Advisory Board and the Lakes Advisory Board.

The American Public Works Association describes this year’s “Community Begins Here” theme: “There would be no community without the quality of life Public Works provides. There would be no community to police and protect, no public to lead or represent. This year’s theme speaks to the essential nature of Public Works services in support of everyday quality of life.”
