Maitland writer wins statewide award

The Florida Writers Association Inc. announced that Ken Pelham of Maitland won a prestigious Royal Palm Literary Award. Pelham’s winning entry, “Out of Sight, Out of Mind: A Writer’s Guide to Mastering Viewpoint,” won first place for Educational/Informational Book, and was named Published Book of the Year. The award was announced at FWA’s recent four-day annual conference in Altamonte Springs. This annual competition, which received 393 submissions, was RPLA’s 14th year. In all, the competition covered 30 adult genres and 15 youth genres, with published and unpublished entries considered separately.

Winter Park student earns scholarship

At Denison University in Ohio, one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges, motivated students from around the world tailor educational experiences in pursuit of their highest aspirations. Logan Creasman, a graduate of Circle Christian School in Winter Park, received the Denison Founders Scholarship. The scholarship is based on academic achievement, leadership and personal merit.

Winter Park announces Fall Cleanup

The city of Winter Park is pleased to announce the 2015 Fall Cleanup during the month of November is just in time for the holiday season. This large-item pickup service will provide a bonus day on which Waste Pro, the city’s solid waste service provider, will pick up old furniture, broken appliances, and other bulky items. To take advantage of this convenient service, residents must place their items curbside after 5 p.m., on the evening before their second scheduled garbage and trash pickup day on their designated cleanup week. If you live north of the Fairbanks/Aloma avenues corridor, your bonus pick-up day will be Thursday, Nov. 5, or Friday, Nov. 6. If you live south of the Fairbanks/Aloma avenues corridor, your bonus pick-up day will be Thursday, Nov. 12, or Friday, Nov. 13.
