The Winter Park Playhouse will be showing the off-Broadway hit “The Marvelous Wonderettes” from Sept. 11 to Oct. 10. Featuring popular songs from the 1950s and ’60s, this musical comedy, created by Roger Bean, is set at Springfield High’s Senior Prom in 1958, where you meet four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Take a musical trip down memory lane with hits such as “Lollipop,” “It’s My Party,” “Dream Lover,” “You Don’t Own Me” and many more! Registration is open for the first Parent Academy event of the new school year, hosted by Orange County Public Schools. This is a free event for parents to learn more about the district and how to help their child be successful in school. During the Parent Academy events, parents can attend several breakout sessions to learn how to become full partners in their child’s education. The first event theme for this school year is “Leading Our Students to Success: A Parent’s Guide to OCPS.” It will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at Edgewater High School from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This informative Parent Academy will provide an array of sessions including: Elementary Standards and Assessments, The Value of OCPS Tech Centers, Digital Resources, Financial Literacy, a Survival Guide for the Beginning of School and much more! Parents can bring the whole family! There will be activities to engage everyone. The Parent Academy is free, lunch is included, and interactive childcare is provided for children ages 4 to 12. An event outlining the benefits of physical activity during grief recovery runs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Crosby YMCA Wellness Center, located at 2005 Mizell Ave. in Winter Park. Rollins Winter Park Institute, a center for intellectual engagement that brings world-renowned speakers to Central Florida, recently announced its first speaker for the 2015-16 academic year, 2011 Nobel Peace Laureate Leymah Gbowee. Gbowee, founder and current president of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, will address “Leading Change Through Activism: The Liberian Women’s Experience” on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Alfond Sports Center. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and the National Center for Simulation will host the Florida Simulation Summit on Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Orlando at the Orange County Convention Center. The Summit will highlight the state’s multi-billion dollar simulation industry and help identify opportunities for businesses to commercialize simulation! A free self-defense class hosted by the city of Maitland Leisure Services Department in conjunction with the Maitland Police Department will be offered at Maitland Community Park on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. The class is for women only, ages 18 and up. The Winter Park Garden Club and the League of Women Voters of Orange County are co-sponsoring a moderated discussion about the pros and cons of fracking in Florida at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Winter Park Garden Club, located at 1300 S. Denning Drive. Chuck O’Neil, first vice president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, will moderate a discussion between David Mica, executive director of the Florida Petroleum Council, and Jennifer Hecker, director of Natural Resource Policy of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. Livingston Taylor, brother of James Taylor, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, in the historic sanctuary of First Congregational Church of Winter Park, located at 225 S. Interlachen Ave. Livingston will perform some of James Taylor’s music as well as popular songs he has written himself. The event will open with folk singer Shawn Garvey, who serves as the senior minister at First Congregational Church of Winter Park. Community Based Care of Central Florida will host its fourth annual Dance, Dream & Inspire ballroom dance and fundraising competition to benefit local children in foster care.
