SEPT. 25

Attendees can grab a blanket or bring a lawn chair and have a glass of wine or cigar while listening to live jazz music for Get Your Jazz On. The event will take place at the Alfond Inn courtyard lawn on Sept. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $35 for an advanced online ticket and $40 at the door. Price will include live music under the stars, wine portions, smoked pig with accompaniments, valet parking and an extended happy hour the day of the event. Dinner reservations in Hamilton's Kitchen Restaurant are recommended after the festivities. Purchase tickets at http://bit.ly/GetYourJazzOn. SEPT. 26

The Maitland Public Library is proud to host author David Lapham for his second and third installments of the “Writers’ Fun Shop” on Sept. 26 and Oct. 3. Sessions will focus on character development and dialogue, respectively, and will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the community room. Barre3 - Winter Park, located at 141 S. New York Ave., Suite 113, is thrilled to celebrate the studio’s three-year anniversary, by breaking out of the studio and bringing its beloved combination of yoga, Pilates and ballet barre work to the great outdoors. On Saturday, Sept. 26, an energetic, fun and free-for-all class will be taught at the main stage in Winter Park’s Central Park by Barre3 - Winter Park owner Ashley Dishman and her team of instructors. Local Winter Park merchants Grounding Roots will be pouring samples of their organic juices, Ivivva athletic wear will host a trunk show, and there will be drawings for raffle prizes provided by Lululemon Athletica and Barre3 - Winter Park immediately after the class. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the class runs from 9 to 10 a.m. Participants are encouraged to arrive early and should come prepared with a yoga mat or beach towel and water bottle. As a part of October’s World Smile Day, you’re invited to an in-store charity event with global jewelry retailer, Alex and Ani, and international children’s cleft charity, Smile Train, on Sept. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. In support of Smile Train’s continued effort to provide cleft surgeries in over 85 developing countries worldwide, Alex and Ani’s Charity By Design team will host a night to shop, socialize and give back at their Winter Park store, located at 356 S. Women of all professions, ages and life stages, will gather for an evening of pampering at the annual Women of Wellness Retreat on Thursday, Oct.1, at 5:30 p.m. at Winter Park's elegant Casa Feliz Historic Home. Participants will enjoy presentations about meal planning, building friendships and yoga poses for gaining balance! Elegant hor d'oeuvres and drink by Arthur's Catering will be provided. OCT. 3

The Parks & Recreation Department of the city of Winter Park and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission present their annual free Test the Waters Fishing Tournament from 7 to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3, at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, located at 1050 W. Morse Blvd. in Winter Park. Children of all ages are invited to participate in this fun-filled event. Bait, fishing poles and snacks will be provided for all participants. The Orlando Area Historical Rose Society invites the public to hear a talk, “Old Garden Roses” on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2:30 p.m. The speakers are Phil and Ann Paul, American Rose Society certified Rosarians. Florida Blue will be hosting the Veterans History Project at the Florida Blue Center in Winter Park Village, Oct. 6 to 8. The Veterans History Project of the American Folklife Center collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans. These stories will be archived in the Library of Congress. The project collects first-hand accounts of U.S. veterans from the following wars: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War and Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts. Florida Blue, a proud supporter of our military men and women, invites veterans in the community to share their stories with interviewers on Oct. 6, 7 and 8. OCT. 10

The Winter Park Autumn Art Festival is the only juried fine art festival to feature Florida artists exclusively. The Winter Park Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the festival on the second weekend in October each year. The community-oriented sidewalk show presents quality visual art and live entertainment the whole family can enjoy. The festival is held in beautiful Central Park located along historic Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park on Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Two years ago Josh Garrick had the unprecedented honor of making history as the first non-Greek artist in the world to exhibit in the National Archaeological Museum of Greece. That exhibit has returned from a two-year tour of Europe to open the new HENAO Contemporary Center, located at 5601 Edgewater Drive in Orlando, on Oct. 10 and run through Jan. 4. “Timeless: Past Present Future,” the opening night will be a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Florida, and the generous people who attend the opening night will be the first Americans to see the exhibit. OCT. 11

Celebrate the opening of the historic Capen-Showalter House on Oct. 11 at the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens in Winter Park. The city of Winter Park will hold the Winter Park Benefit Shop’s 80th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the first floor of the Welcome Center, located at 151 W. OCT. 18

The 2015 National Young Composers Challenge Composium will start at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, in the Walt Disney Theater. It will be conducted by Maestro Christopher Wilkins and will feature the winning original compositions for ensemble and full orchestra by America’s top young composers. From 117 score submissions, the judges chose the top five ensemble and top three full-orchestra compositions from the dozens of scores selected as finalists.
