Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) of Orange, Osceola and Seminole is seeking counselor volunteers. SHINE is an award winning, statewide volunteer program that provides free, unbiased counseling and information for people on Medicare, their families and caregivers. This month, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Greater Orlando is offering free educational classes at various locations throughout Central Florida. Their Family-to-Family, Basics, Provider Education and Crisis Intervention Training (CIT & CIT Youth) classes provide strategies and tools for families, caregivers and law enforcement who are affected by mental illness. If you enjoy nature, the Winter Park Garden Club invites you to attend an open house for prospective members on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. The open house and plant clinic will be held at their clubhouse, which is located in the heart of Mead Garden at 1300 S. Denning Drive in Winter Park. Refreshments will be served. Tom MacCubbin, one of Florida’s foremost lawn and garden experts, will be at the open house to identify plants in your yard and diagnose diseases they might have. Get a haircut, and give one to someone in need. Hair Cuttery, the largest family-owned and operated chain of hair salons in the country, will be donating back-to-school haircuts to children who need it most this summer. Through Aug. 15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, one free haircut certificate will be donated to a disadvantaged child in the community. Hair Cuttery has 19 locations in Orlando and three in Winter Park.
