Louis Roney: Who will it be?

August, September, October and finally in November the American electorate has an opportunity to change the guard - can the world wait that long?

At this moment I am sitting at my desk recalling the words I wrote about Orlando’s first incident of domestic terrorism. This in Orlando:

“It had to happen somewhere, I suppose, but you never think it could be where you live. The TV tells us that some 40-plus people have been killed and another 53 injured as of this time — all from one shooter! — in the worst mass killing in U.S. history. Some “name acts” were entertaining at the Pulse nightclub that evening and the club was full.

Bizarrely, on the day prior singer Christina Grimmie was killed after her performance at the Plaza Live Theater. Two tragic happenings in Orlando in two days! Much has been said to the effect that the Grimmie shooting was the work of a suicidal assassin —a lone lunatic. The terrible mass shooting has been tied to a hate episode (LGBT) and/or an ISIS connection? The shooter being Omar Mateen of Port St. Lucie, Fla. — details are, as yet, undetermined. The FBI and the president have called the shooting a terrorist action — ISIS has claimed responsibility. This all happened in our backyard! — the city beautiful — a family vacation area. What contradiction. What great sadness…”

I wrote this the day after the attack at the nightclub. No sooner had the ominous dust begun to settle in Orlando than we receive news that Nice, France has been a victim of a horrific terrorist attack that has left 84 dead at the last count and another 200 injured. The hatred that impels such mischievous enormities is difficult to pinpoint and ascribe to specific individuals and groups, but such monstrous hatefulness must be stopped and eliminated for all-time lest international travel, and life itself, become unthinkable if not impossible. It is in the interest of the whole world to end this violence quickly with severe consequences to the perpetrators.

But America has no visible leader who will act in its defense presently. August, September, October and finally in November the American electorate has an opportunity to change the guard — can the world wait that long? How many more innocent people will die in the meantime?

Perhaps a few of these “happenings” were caused by a mad man working alone, but common sense tells us that, if not all, most of the terror-killings are being done by groups of radical Islamic terrorists such as ISIS, Hamas, al-Qaeda etc. These are fringe groups who demand all people follow their religion, their sharia law, and their customs — or die. No matter what type of government most countries have, the right to human life is unquestioned no matter religion or lack thereof. This is not a singular problem and has affected many countries. But no leadership is in sight. How many more meetings, conferences, never ending talks, etc. must we sustain before anyone will propose wiping out the problem — all the fringe groups — and then offering to let those who give up their killing ways to live and let live?

The next American president will be Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. Does either have the will and the guts to do the job?

Hillary has been in government for some 20-plus years, first as a First Lady, then as a senator, then secretary of state. Her achievements have been dismal at best, with a series of scandals following wherever she went.

Donald is a successful businessman. No political past. As an American citizen over the age of 35 he has the right to become a candidate for the presidency.

Whom do we take the chance on? Who will successfully lead the world to a riddance of terrorism? How many more Orlandos do we need to experience before we act?

The world is obviously waiting for America once again to lead, even though the problem is not just America’s to solve. Is the world tired yet of vigils, candlelight, and teddy bears, and ready to solve this problem? This is national security — and world security defense. Who will it be? And this is only one problem…
