Crealdé School of Art kicks off its 2016-17 exhibition season with an original two-venue exhibition of diverse and multicultural artists titled “Spinning Yarn: Storytelling Through Southern Art” opening Friday, Sept. 16, at the Alice & William Jenkins Gallery and the Hannibal Square Heritage Center. The evening begins with a 7 to 8:30 p.m. reception at the Jenkins Gallery and continues from 8:30 to 10 p.m. at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center with live music. The event is free.
The Winter Park Playhouse opens its new series of professional musicals with its production of “All Hands On Deck!” from Friday, Sept. 16 to Sunday, Oct. 9. “All Hands On Deck!” is a salute to 1942 wartime entertainment with over 40 classic big band hits. Evening tickets are $40 and $36 for seniors. Matinee tickets are $30. Preview tickets are $20. Student and theatre professional tickets are $15. Volunteers for the Central Florida Affiliate of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America are raising awareness of this devastating genetic neurological disease through a community fundraising event, Team Hope Walk. Please join the Central Florida Affiliate members at the Team Hope Walk in Altamonte Springs being held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Cranes Roost Park, located at 274 Cranes Roost Blvd. All proceeds support HDSA’s mission to improve the lives of people affected by Huntington’s Disease and their families. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk kicks off at 9 a.m. The Central Florida Affiliate is asking for support from the community to become a sponsor, form a team, walk as an individual, donate products or volunteer to coordinate the event activities. Winter Park Presbyterian Church invites the community to a violin and piano recital on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. with two of the most highly regarded classical musicians in the Central Florida area. The concert will take place in the sanctuary of Winter Park Presbyterian Church. Violinist Matitiahu (Mati) Braun came to the United States from Israel in 1962 to study at The Julliard School with Joseph Fuchs. After retiring from the New York Philharmonic, Braun relocated to Maitland where he maintains a private studio. Accompanying Braun is pianist Holly Small. She has taught piano at the University of Central Florida and served as staff accompanist and coach at Rollins College and Stetson University. Small is currently a choral accompanist with Orange County Public Schools, as well as a freelance pianist and organist. Selections for the event include pieces from Giardini, Veracini, Busoni, Stenhammar, Bartok, and Copland. Admission is free. Pantry to Plate Chefs’ Challenge is a unique dining event designed to test the culinary skills of three local celebrity chefs. This year, Francesco Aiello from Francesco’s Ristorante, Mark Baize from Roy’s Restaurant, and Julie Casey from Outpost Neighborhood Kitchen will take on the challenge of preparing a delectable recipe with ingredients found in JFS Orlando’s Pearlman Emergency Food Pantry. This event will happen on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Winter Park Civic Center, 1050 W. Morse Blvd. Tickets are $125 per person. For the 12th year in a row, the Winter Park Public Library will hold its annual Bash for Books. Attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the largest number of cities participating in the same race on the same day at the Global Energy Race. On Sept. 25, 37 cities around the world, will run as one. Starting at 6 a.m. at Festival Park, 2911 E. Robinson St., Orlando, runners can participate in a 10K run option as well as a 3K run/walk. Bimbo Bakeries USA will donate two slices of bread to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for each kilometer completed by each runner in Orlando, which equates to one loaf of bread per completed 10K. First place male and female winners in each city where the 10K is held will be awarded an all-expenses paid trip to run in any 2017 Global Energy Race participant city. After making history as the first non-Greek artist in history to exhibit in the National Archaeological Museum of Greece, Orlando’s fine art photographer Josh Garrick will open an exhibit of new works at the Henao Contemporary Center, the art gallery that opened with Garrick’s work one year ago. The new exhibit, “Classicism from Two Continents,” will include new works along with a tribute to Iris Kritikou, the distinguished European curator who has championed Garrick’s work for three years – beginning with the history-making exhibit at Greece’s world-famous National Archaeological Museum. Merchants along Park Avenue are selling topiary displays of pets and wildlife through the month of September, with all funds supporting the Lost Pets Foundation, WinterParkLostPets.com and Canine Companions for Independence. Last year the same effort raised roughly $3,700.
To kick off Hunger Action Month, the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is urging the community to “Skip a Meal.” Participants who accept this challenge get the opportunity to see what it’s like to be like the one in six Central Floridians who struggle with hunger. In addition to skipping a meal, participants are encouraged to donate what one would typically spend on lunch, around $10, to SkipAMeal.org. That price provides 40 meals.
