A new Winter Park development in its early planning stages could give one section of U.S. Highway 17-92 a major overhaul.
Local developers Demetree Global are looking to develop the six-way intersection of Orlando, Orange and Harmon avenues – a project that all starts with a roundabout placed at the center of the busy crossroads, Winter Park Spokesperson Clarissa Howard said.
Demetree Global presented its plans for a roundabout six months ago during a meeting with the city, and Howard said the developer is still interested in building out the intersection.
Winter Park Director of Planning and Community Development Dori Stone said the city didn’t have any further details on the project since nothing has been formally submitted, but did confirm that Demetree Global continues to purchase lots surrounding the intersection, including the former location of Lombardi’s Seafood and the TD Bank building.
In addition to anchoring a new development, a roundabout could have added safety benefits, according to a report released on roundabouts by the Florida Department of Transportation.
“By converting from a signalized intersection to a roundabout, a location can experience a 78 percent reduction in severe (injury/fatal) crashes and a 48 percent reduction in overall crashes,” the report reads.
That report adds that roundabouts “can be an effective tool for managing speed and creating a transition area that moves traffic from a high-speed to a low-speed environment,” all while cautioning that “proper site selection, channelization, and design features are essential.”
The section of U.S. Highway 17-92 that includes the six-way intersection sees an annual average daily traffic of 26,000 cars, according to the Florida Department of Transportations’ online traffic map.
Demetree Global declined to comment further on the project.
“We are aware of the chatter about the Winter Park area,” Director of Marketing Michelle Heatherly said. “We are unable to provide any information at this time.”
