The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting in Ocoee that resulted in the death of the suspect.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, in the Publix parking lot at 301 West Road, Ocoee.
Ocoee Police Chief Vincent Ogburn Sr. said during a press conference Thursday, Aug. 14, that witness accounts and surveillance video showed investigators that the suspect, Stacie Lynn Guerrero, 54, and another female, Andrea Barbosa, entered Publix before the incident with the officers.
"Mrs. Guerrero was recognized by store staff from previous shoplifting incidents and was suspected for shoplifting again on Sunday," Ogburn said. "When she was confronted by loss prevention, she exited the store, abandoning her shopping cart of unpaid items and returned to the SUV."
Ogburn said both Guerrero had an extensive criminal history spanning multiple counties and included charges such as battery on law enforcement, fleeing from police and fraud. She had 15 felony charges, 19 felony convictions and two active warrants at the time. One of the warrants was out of Seminole County for petty theft, and the other was out of Orange County for fraudulent use of personal identification or information.
Guerrero was in a silver BMW when officers approached her and engaged in a conversation.
Ogburn said officers already were responding to the report of the stolen BMW in the area of Ocoee-Apopka Road and West Road.
Guerrero backed up her vehicle, striking one of the officers with the vehicle and knocking the officer back, Ogburn said.
He said at this point, one of the officers was trapped by the car's door as he tried to remove Guerrero from the car while she then drove forward, striking the other officer as he was backing away.
"Because of the threats to the lives, one of the officers discharged a service weapon striking Ms. Guerrero," Ogburn said.
He said although Guerrero did not have any weapons on her at the time, the car was considered a weapon in this incident.
He said due to the investigation being ongoing, he could not say how many shots were fired.
Guerrero was transported to an AdventHealth hospital but later died.
"We understand that the loss of life is tragic, and we take this incident very seriously," Ogburn said. "We ask the community for their patience as this investigation is ongoing. We are committed to transparency, public safety and to make sure that all the relevant facts are looked at."
Ogburn said this was a contained incident to that vehicle, and the public was not in danger.
Neither officer sustained serious injuries, and in accordance with department policy, both officers have been placed on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues.
Ogburn said it was later determined that Barbosa had shoplifted items from the store and was arrested for petty theft, and she also had an active warrant for her arrest.
