For nearly two decades, Dr. Katie Hohman, founder of Hohman Rehab Physical Therapy, has dedicated her life to improving the lives of others.
And she has plenty of success stories. Patients have entered one of her three clinics with pain they’ve been living with for weeks, months or even years. Then, six weeks later, they leave changed — pain-free and with a renewed outlook on life.
One patient came to Hohman after years of popping Advil every night just to be able to sleep. His primary care physician had told him the pain was simply because he was getting older.
And while that may be the cause of the pain, that’s hardly the end of the story.
“When we get older, we do lose muscle mass,” Hohman said. “But it can be restored; we just have to work at it.”
Family-owned and -operated since 2009, Hohman Rehab offers these life-altering treatments at three locations — Ocoee, 11095 W. Colonial Drive; Clermont, 236 Mohawk Road; and Apopka, 125 S. Park Ave.
Although all three clinics treat their share of high-level athletes as they recover from injuries, physical therapy is an effective, conservative choice to treat myriad conditions, including chronic pain (back, elbow, headaches, jaw and more); injuries from car crashes; lymphedema; Parkinson’s disease; multiple sclerosis; pediatric disorders; vertigo; and more.
What’s more, because Florida is a direct-access state, patients can schedule an appointment with Hohman Rehab without a referral from their doctors. Better yet: Hohman Rehab accepts all insurances.
“(Physical therapy) is the conservative way to get rid of pain, so there’s no reason not to try it before going with something that is more invasive and risky,” she said.
Currently, Hohman Rehab has nine therapists on staff, ensuring every patient receives one-on-one physical therapy during their sessions.
“We’re one of the only clinics in West Orange County that offers (one-on-one therapy),” Hohman said. “Typically, a therapist will see two or three people at the same time. But that compromises care.”
And quality care always has been at the center of Hohman Rehab. Whether it’s rehabbing a patient following a car accident or surgery, or treating chronic knee pain, headaches, TMJ or fibromyalgia, Hohman is dedicated to providing personalized, quality care to every patient who walks through her doors.
“Our therapists are top-notch, fun and caring professionals who are driven by getting you the results you desire,” she said. “I often remind our therapists just how much of an impact they have. We can have a patient come in sitting in a wheelchair and leave walking on their own.
“(During treatment) we really get to know our patients, and a big percentage of them come back to see us,” Hohman said.
Treatment lengths vary depending on the diagnosis; however, Hohman said the typical process takes three sessions per week for six weeks. And despite the horror stories some may have heard about physical therapy, it is not torture, she said, laughing.
“Physical therapy is work, but the patients we see are motivated and determined,” she said. “It is not all pain and torture. We’re not about to have someone come in here and then feel worse. They’d never come back.”
Hohman said patients seeking physical therapy should know they have a choice when selecting a clinic.
“If your doctor refers you to physical therapy, you can look around to find (a place) that works for you,” she said.
In addition to treating injuries, chronic pain and other ailments, physical therapy also is beneficial as a preventative measure. For instance, if someone is about to have a knee procedure, pre-surgery therapy can help strengthen the muscles and enhance flexibility, which both can quicken the recovery process. Hohman also encourages annual sessions as maintenance to prevent more significant problems in the future.
And, while some are deterred by the perceived cost of physical therapy, Hohman is quick to point out a different treatment course could prove to be more expensive.
“Research has shown that (physical therapy) saves consumers money in the long run,” she said. “If you’re experiencing headaches and you go to your doctor, you’ll have a co- pay for every visit. Then, the doctor will prescribe medications. And then you might have to have an MRI or CT scan. It adds up.”
