West Orange High rising senior Chakai Scott has announced his commitment to play college football on the West Coast as a member of the Sacramento State Hornets, choosing to play in the Golden State's capital over offers from other FCS schools Chattanooga and Delaware and FBS programs Pittsburgh and UMass.
“First off, I want to thank God for allowing me to live the dream and for protecting me the whole way through,” Scott said in his announcement video posted to his Instagram. “I want to thank my family, especially my mom and my dad, for always showing up through thick and thin. I want to thank my coaches and my teammates for pushing me to be the best version of myself on and off the field. Just like most football players, my goal is (to reach) the NFL and I believe if I stay dedicated, stay humble, grind and keep God in the center, it'll all play out. Give all glory to God, because without Him, I wouldn't be in this situation. … With that being said, for the next three to four years, I'll be taking my talents to Sacramento State.”
Scott, a versatile 5-foot-10, 175-pound defensive back, picked up 75 total tackles — five of which were for a loss — a pair of interceptions, seven pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery as a key member of the Warriors' defense last season.
"Sacramento State is getting a dynamic ball player," said West Orange football coach Geno Thompson. "He can play any position in the secondary and is explosive off the edge, blocking five kicks last year. His leadership ability is top-notch. Commanding the secondary and putting us in position to have success!"
