Dr. Phillips High has announced the hiring of Central Florida Christian Academy assistant LaToya Russ as the Lady Panthers' next head girls basketball coach, following the departure of legendary coach Anthony Jones for Montverde Academy.

Russ takes over one of the most dominant public school athletic programs in the state, regardless of sport. The Lady Panthers have reached the state championship game each of the last four seasons, winning three in a row in 2021-22, 22-23 and 23-24, and across Jones' nearly two-decade tenure, Dr. Phillips won six state titles and two national titles.

With more than 20 years of experience coaching at a variety of levels, Russ brings her own championship pedigree to the storied program, having served as an assistant coach for two state-championship-winning teams during her time at Wekiva High, under head coach Tommie Butts, six state title game appearances and four undefeated middle school cluster championship seasons.

"Let's give a warm Panther welcome to Coach (Russ), who brings over 20 years of experience ... and (an) unwavering commitment to developing student athletes both on and off the court," said a post on Dr. Phillips High Athletic's Facebook page announcing the hire. "Coach (Russ) is excited for what the future holds as Dr Phillips' new head girls basketball coach.
