Ocoee’s Crunch Fitness at 1560 E. Silver Star Road, Ocoee is undergoing water testing due to a potential cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases. According to Legionnaires’ Lawyers, Legionnaires’ disease is contracted when a person inhales small water droplets or mist containing the Legionella bacteria.

One woman from Ocoee was recently diagnosed with the disease and confirmed she is a member of Crunch Fitness of Ocoee.

It is reported that 28 people may have been exposed to the bacteria as well. Crunch Fitness stated it is cooperating with health officials and has closed off parts of the gym to undergo water testings of its pool and spa systems by certified third-party specialists.

Crunch added that it has spent more than $5 million renovating the facility, including its heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and its aquatic systems prior to opening in 2024.

Legionnaires’ disease cases were previously investigated at that same location in 2017 when it was an L.A. Fitness gym.

It is important to note the Legionella bacteria is not transmitted person-to-person. Symptoms may include fever, body ache, shortness of breath and pneumonia, and will appear two to 10 days after being exposed to the bacteria.

It is crucial to see a doctor if you are experiencing any of these symptoms as this disease can lead to hospitalization and, in some cases, death.

Crunch Fitness remains open during the investigation and the source of the illness has yet to be confirmed.
