The high school football season has entered its home stretch with only four more games left. The teams across West and Southwest Orange return from their bye weeks hungry and ready to play.
Remaining undefeated at this point in the season is no easy feat, but CFCA and Windermere High both have only tasted victory. The Wolverines have continued to show up every game and its largest win came Friday, Sept. 12 when the team defeated University 70-3. The team averages 51.7 points per game and that same level of aggression can be expected tonight. CFCA has remained consistent, slowly improving each and every game at the hands of its youthful talent.
Five district games commence for the West and Southwest Orange football programs. Dr. Phillips is visiting East Ridge, both teams are tied for first in their district. The Panthers will be hunting to pick up right where they left off before the bye week against opponents who are ranked No. 99 in Florida.
Horizon is up for a tough task tonight as it plays the top team in its district, South Lake. South Lake is ranked No. 20 in Orlando, compared to Horizon’s ranking of No. 61, but scoring wise there isn’t much difference. The Hawks’ goal will be to limit South Lake’s passing game. It’s a battle of the West schools as West Orange hosts West Port. The Warriors sit at a No. 14 ranking in Orlando, the team’s only loss came from its game against Boone, who’s proved to be a successful program.
Olympia’s and Celebration’s records are identical. Both are 1-5 and have one loss in district play and tonight will be the difference maker.
The Titans are coming off a bye week, so the players will be rested and replenished. The largest issue for the team this year has been finishing games. Olympia has led games through three quarters, but when it came to finishing out, the team has struggled. In order to win, the team must stop that from occurring and limit turnovers.
Last week Celebration brought in its first win this season, so the team will be traveling to Olympia on a high note, and the Titans must shut that down. In the last two matchups between the programs, Olympia won, but head coach Travis Gabriel said the players can’t let that get to their heads.
Statistically, Olympia averages 24 more yards per game than Celebration. The Titans are ranked No. 51 in Florida Division 7A, while Celebration is No. 64. A key player tonight for Olympia is quarterback Noble Davis. Davis is averaging 145 yards per game and if he can connect with his receivers, the offense will flow. From a defensive standpoint, eyes should be on safety Ryder Flynn. During Olympia’s game against Lake Nona, he was recognized as the player of the game for his two interceptions and he plays an important role in bringing up the team’s unity and perseverance.
