Ocoee to host Ocoee Remembers Memorial Wall Ceremony

The city of Ocoee is hosting an Ocoee Remembers Memorial Wall Ceremony that will be a time for reflection and remembrance of the Ocoee Election Day Massacre. 

The ceremony will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Unity Park, 130 N. Cumberland Ave.

Nov. 1 marks the day of the events that took place more than 100 years ago during the massacre of Nov. 1, 1920. 

Descendants of the African Americans who lived in Ocoee during that time will be honored as special guests. 

During the ceremony, families will place single white roses at the city's Memorial Wall, which has the names of the 263 Black residents who called Ocoee home. 

The Memorial Wall first was unveiled in 2024, as part of the city's ongoing reconciliation efforts that formally began in 2018 when the city issued an Ocoee Massacre Proclamation. In 2020, the city presented an official apology letter during the centennial commemoration of the 1920 Election Day events.
