Before entering five road games in a row, Windermere High (3-0) highlighted its team's talent in their 61-0 home win over Colonial (1-2), marking another scoring record this season.
The score captured the flow of the game. Windermere received the ball to start off and instantly stopped Colonial on their first drive, a trend that continued throughout the night. The Wolverines wasted no time on their opening drive, scoring within seconds, and two minutes later they found the end zone once again.
“I told our players that we hadn’t played a complete game yet,” said head coach Riki Smith. “We’ve had success offensively, defensively and special teams but not all together, collectively, and this whole week we’ve focused on the little things.”
It truly was a tale of brotherhood. The Wolverines emphasized the importance of their off-field relationships, and it reflects in their playing style. A strong level of communication and trust in each other presented itself on every drive. Smith said he views the players as his sons.
Many backups like quarterback Dean Monroe started after a running clock began. He threw an interception with 4:33 left in the third quarter, but the team rallied together, mistakes happen and he wiped off the dirt to later throw a passing touchdown.
“When we watch the film there will be a lot of mistakes, so I think the biggest thing I told the players is that you always have to stay humble,” Smith said. “Humility before honor. I tell them that if you’re humble, eventually you’ll be exalted.”
He reflected on a few years ago when Windermere was the team getting blownout by opponents, he understands what it’s like and how bad that feeling is. To him, they need to emphasize an even mentality, never becoming too high on moments and never becoming too low.
The Wolverines triumphed in their defeat of Colonial, leaving a fond taste of victory before they begin their long road game journey. Their home field won’t see them again until Oct. 24 when they face Innovation.
