Orange County's drought index has reached 500 on the KBDI scale.

Because of that, a burn ban now is in effect and will remain in effect until the drought index dips below 500 KBDI for seven consecutive days.

Outdoor burnings such as campfires, outdoor fireplaces, open-flame heating devices and more now are banned.

Outdoor burnings authorized by the county or state are not affected by the ban, neither is the use of outdoor grills or pits.

The Orange County Fire Rescue reminds residents to clear trash and dead vegetation from front and backyards, remove leaves and debris from roof and gutters, have an emergency kit packed and a plan in place in case evacuation is ordered, create at least 30 feet of defensible space around homes, use caution when grilling, camping and discarding cigarettes, and call 911 if a fire occurs or someone is violating the ban.
