Dr. Phillips boys basketball team heading to 7A District 5 Championship

The Panthers will play Saturday, Feb. 7 for the championship game.

Dr. Phillips High boys basketball team will play for the 7A District 5 Championship against Oak Ridge at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. 

On the team’s road to the championship contest, the Panthers first topped West Orange 72-16 The team recorded a season high 22 assists during the game. Sophomore Caleb Smith led the team with 18 points and Malaki Baker followed closely with 16 points. 

The Panthers then headed to the semifinals Thursday, Feb. 5, where they played Olympia. Dr. Phillips narrowly won 55-50 and leading the way was sophomore Josiah Gillard with 16 points, six rebounds and three assists. His brother, senior Isaiah Gillard closely followed with 14 points and four assists. 

Dr. Phillips enters the championship game with a 15-11 record, an improvement over last year’s finish of 11-15 and loss in the district semifinals.
