Innovation Montessori Ocoee celebrated the proclamation of Montessori Education Week Monday, Feb. 23, through Friday, Feb. 27.

Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson read the proclamation at the Ocoee City Council meeting Tuesday, Feb. 17, and then on Monday, Feb. 23, he visited Innovation Montessori Ocoee's Elementary campus.

While on campus, he read the proclamation to students in fourth through sixth grades, and he also spoke to students about citizenship and civil engagement. He encouraged students to take an active role in their community. Students asked questions, took photos with Johnson and received autographs.

A group of kindergartners and VPK students performed a song that "highlighted the spirit of community and connection that defines the Montessori approach to education," according to a news release.

"This was a meaningful and inspiring way to kick of Montessori Education Week," said representatives of the school in a news release. "We are grateful to Mayor Johnson and the city of Ocoee for recognizing the impact of Montessori education and for engaging directly with our students."
