The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is warning drivers of an ongoing fraudulent scheme regarding counterfeit court notices.

These notices claim to come from Florida county courts and related judicial offices, saying recipients have outstanding traffic and toll violations, demanding immediate payment.

While these court notices resemble official government correspondence, there a few ways to tell if they're fake:

  • QR codes directing recipients to payment portals
  • Instructions to provide funds immediately
  • Fabricated case numbers

The FLHSMV reminds residents that official government entities will not request payments through QR codes, third-party links or unverified online platforms.

If residents receive one of these false notices, they're instructed to report it the Federal Trade Commission and local law enforcement.
