WINTER GARDEN It took four hours and included a lightning delay, but the Winter Garden Squeeze opened their third season in the Florida Collegiate Summer League with a win Friday night.
Buoyed by a six-run third inning, the Squeeze (1-0) topped the visiting DeLand Suns (0-1) 10-8 at West Orange High's Heller Bros. Ballpark.
Hunter Mercer, Nick Niarchos and Zach Richardson each had a pair of RBIs and Chase Pilato got the the win on the mound in the debut of new manager Jay Welsh.
Winter Garden, which has won two of its three home openers since joining the FCSL in 2014, will travel to DeLand Saturday for the conclusion of a two-game set against the Suns.
First pitch is schedule for 7:00 p.m. at Conrad Park, home of the Stetson Hatters.
