Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins has decided that only one bad-weather make-up day is necessary for this school year.
During the Oct. 8 School Board meeting, Jenkins determined that the required 900 hours of instructional time would still be met despite waiving one make-up day. That date was originally slated to be Monday, Nov. 25, which is the first day of Thanksgiving break. However, that make-up date is no longer necessary.
OCPS’ alternative school calendar replaces Tuesday, Sept. 3, with a make-up day on Oct. 17. Wednesday, Sept. 4, has been eliminated based on instructional minutes. To see the alternative adopted calendar, click here.
In addition to the alternative school calendar, the School Board also is recognizing the following:
Beginning Oct. 21, OCPS recognizes this week under the theme “My School Bus – The Safest Form of Student Transportation!” According to OCPS, "this proclamation from Orange County Public Schools shows community support of other governmental and law enforcement agencies to promote school bus safety initiatives."
For the week of Oct. 21, OCPS is recognizing America's Safe Schools Week. "The goal is to motivate key education and law enforcement policymakers, as well as students, parents and community residents, to vigorously advocate for school safety," according to OCPS.
National Lights On Afterschool Day is Thursday, Oct. 24. This day recognizes the positive impacts afterschool programs have on students and their families. There are approximately 8.4 million school-age children in afterschool programs in the nation. This includes 165 schools and over 20,000 elementary- and middle-school students in OCPS schools.
