A fatal seven-vehicle crash on Florida's Turnpike between State Road 50 and State Road 429 has shut down all southbound lanes in the area.

Lt. Kim Montes, public affairs officer for the Florida Highway Patrol, said the crash occurred on the Turnpike near mile marker 271 around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Montes said a disabled car was on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes when another car left the roadway and struck the car on the shoulder. She added the event ignited a chain-reaction crash.

One person died at the hospital and four others have been transported, troopers said.

"This is a very complex crash involving multiple vehicles," Montes said. "Expect the southbound lanes to be shut down in this area throughout the evening."
