Man accused of killing stepfather near Ocoee

A 44-year-old man was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 5, and is being accused of killing and dismembering his stepfather who was reported missing Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday, Aug. 5, 71-year-old Jorge Vazquez-Escutia was murdered. 

Vazquez-Escutia was last seen around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, near 8600 block of Hal Court and there were concerns for his wellbeing due to his memory loss issues. He was reported missing that same day. 

"We have tragic news to share today," OCSO shared Wednesday, Aug. 5. "We can confirm that 71-year-old Jorge Vazquez-Escutia ... has been murdered. And deputies have arrested his stepson in this killing."

His stepson, Jose L. Proano, 44, is facing a first-degree murder charge. 

OCSO said deputies discovered evidence Proano killed Vazquez-Escutia, dismembered him and tried to dispose of his body in suitcases. 

"Our thoughts are with Mr. Vazquez-Escutia’s loved ones as they navigate this unimaginable loss," OCSO officials said.
