Even ESPN was in the building. Ocoee's student section was rocking the entire game and students dressed up as broadcasters to show their support.
As the clock dwindled down into the last minute of game play, Ocoee High girls basketball team’s coaches made an outfit change. At the same time, a steady but growing cheer, “Ocoee, Ocoee, Ocoee,” rang through the gym.
The coaches entered the game adorned in matching white pants, red jackets and white t-shirts with the red letters, “Ocoee against everyone.” But as the game elapsed they pulled black t-shirts out of their bags with white letters reading “Jacksonville.”
The simple message spoke volume and as the clock struck zero, cheers boomed throughout the Knights’ home court in celebration of Ocoee heading to the Final Four.
Ocoee topped Colonial High 51-28 in the Class 7A Region 1 Final and earned the Regional Championship title for the second year in a row Friday, Feb. 27. At first the game was closely contested but by halftime Ocoee had pulled away with a 23-11 lead and maintained it throughout the night.
The Lady Knights next stop is the 7A State Final Four in Jacksonville Friday, March 13.
It’s the first season the state tournament will be held in Jacksonville after moving from Lakeland.
