ONP to host firefly self-guided hike

Starting Friday, March 20, Oakland Nature Preserve will be hosting self-guided hikes to look at fireflies.

Firefly season is here!

Visit the Oakland Nature Preserve on select dates to explore the boardwalk and look at fireflies.

From 7 to 9 p.m. starting Friday, March 20, visitors can enjoy the magic of watching fireflies in action at 747 Machete Trail, Oakland.

Staff members will be present at the start of the boardwalk to answer any questions.

The event is free to attend, but donations are welcome.

ONP asks visitors to not touch or capture the fireflies, no flashlights, no bug spray, no pets and no smoking.

The preserve asks visitors to report others who are not following the rules to volunteers along the boardwalk for the safety and comfort of all.

Firefly shirts will be on sale for $18.

If inclement weather occurs, the event will be canceled.

Select dates include March 20-23, March 29, April 1-2, April 4-8, April 15, April 19, April 20 and April 24.
