+ Obtaining her wings

Lt. j.g. Abby Ellis received her U.S. Navy Aviator ‘Wings of Gold’ at NAS Whiting Field in Milton on June 26. She graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2012. She will be assigned to fly MH-60S helicopters in Norfolk, Va. Ellis is the granddaughter of Ann and Bob Ellis and the late Betty Jo Ellis. With her are her parents, Janelle and Tom Ellis of Lancaster, Pa., and her aunt and uncle, Mickey and Susan Ellis Shiver of Donalsonville, Ga.

+ Elvis co-star to speak at Garden Theatre film series

This Thursday’s movie at the Garden Theatre is “Paradise, Hawaiian Style,” featuring Elvis Presley and Suzanna Leigh. Now living in Winter Garden, Leigh will speak for 20 minutes starting at 6:55 p.m. and then introduce the movie. Her book, “Paradise Suzanna Style,” will be for sale in the lobby. Tickets are $5 general admission. The theater is in downtown Winter Garden.

+ Dean’s list

Kaylee Hoover of Winter Garden has been named to the McDaniel College spring dean’s list with highest honors. McDaniel College is in Westminster, Md.

+ Learn basics of veggie gardening

The UF/IFAS Extension Service is offering a class on vegetable gardening from 6-7:30 p.m. this Thursday, July 17. It takes place at the Jessie Brock Community Center, 310 N. Dillard St., Winter Garden.

Learn the basics of Florida vegetable gardening, including soil preparation, adjusting soil pH, fertilizing, irrigation, pests and diseases. The class is free, but participants must register online at ocmgs.eventbrite.com. For information, call (407) 254-9200.

+ Last bluegrass show Sat. at Garden Theatre

The final bluegrass show in the series at the Garden Theatre will feature the Sweeney Family Band at 8 p.m. Aug. 2 and 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Tickets can be purchased at gardentheatre.org/concerts or at the box office at (407) 877-4736.

The theater is at 160 W. Plant St., Winter Garden.

+ Christmas in July at Faith Family

More than 20 vendors and crafters will set up at Faith Family Community Church’s Christmas in July festival. It will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, July 19, at the church, 305 Beulah Road, Winter Garden. Vendors will be selling home décor, jewelry, handmade crafts, skincare items and custom gifts.

+ Garden Theatre movies

The Garden Theatre’s 2014 Summer Movie Series continues through Aug. 22. All movies begin at 7 p.m., and tickets are $5 general admission.

The theater will hold an audience talkback this Thursday, July 17, with Suzanna Leigh, who performed with Elvis Presley in “Paradise, Hawaiian Style.”

The Winter Garden Art Association, 127 S. Boyd St., offers “Sizzlin Summer at SoBo 2014” — themed art experiences and exploration for children in kindergarten through fifth grades. Mediums include watercolor, acrylic, sketching and three-dimensional art.
